Govett William Romaineview full entry
Reference: from ADB: William Romaine Govett (1807-1848), surveyor, was born on 3 October 1807 at Tiverton, Devon, England, the third son of John Govett, surgeon, and his wife Susanna Price, née Owen. He was at Blundell's School, Tiverton, from 1817 to 1820. He was appointed assistant surveyor in the Surveyor-General's Department of New South Wales on 10 July 1827 at £240 a year, reached Sydney in the Asia next December and began work on (Sir) Thomas Mitchell's staff. Part of his work included surveying on the old Bathurst road, during which he discovered Govett's Leap in the Blue Mountains, which was named by Mitchell in his honour. Mitchell was pleased with Govett and described him in a report on the department in 1832 as a wild young man who needed control, who had come to the colony ignorant of surveying but with much natural talent had become perhaps the ablest delineator of ground in the department, and who was remarkably clever at dealing with unexplored country.
In February 1829 Govett was sent to the Hawkesbury River, where many farms required measurement, but in 1833 his career ended abruptly when the department was reduced. Govett returned to England in the Ann in March 1834 with a letter of recommendation from Mitchell to the British government. After his return to England Govett lived at Tiverton, where he wrote several articles on New South Wales which were published in the Saturday Magazine between 7 May 1836 and 2 September 1837 under the title 'Sketches of New South Wales'. They dealt with such topics as the nature of the country he had helped to survey, the habits of the Aboriginals, and life in Sydney; they were illustrated with twelve paintings by Govett, which were later advertised for sale by G. Michelmore & Co.
Govett appears to have undergone a personal crisis after his return and repented of his wild early life, but although he considered going abroad again and making a fresh beginning he did not live long and died on 22 August 1848 in London.]

Griffin's story was remarkable. As Official War Artist and sent to the front line, he was captured by the Japanese and
imprisoned in Changi. Without paints he ground his own, and painted on door wood and prison records, even holding
several exhibitions in the camp, Japanese guards admiring his work. When raids for wirelesses were undertaken, Griffin
hid his paintings by burying and bricking them into recesses of buildings.

Australian Printmaking in the 1990s - Artist Printmakers 1990-1995view full entry
Reference: by Sasha Grishin. Examines the work of 157 contemporary Australian printmakers, listed alphabetically with short biographical essays, exhibiting details, illustrations of works and other information on each artist. [’Dr Sasha Grishin's pioneering study examines the complex fabric of the art of printmaking in Australia today. Drawing exclusively on the work of Australian artists making prints from 1990 to 1995 he argues for a revival of interest in Australian printmaking in recent years. He identifies three principal reasons for this revival: the impact of new technologies, such as computer-manipulated images and laser prints; the impact of Australian Aboriginal prints; and the new relationship which Australian printmakers are establishing with the Asia Pacific region. Dr Grishin examines closely the activities of 157 leading Australian printmakers. For each artist he provides an overview of their work and reproduces one of their recent prints. Very few of these prints have been reproduced before and they provide a fresh insight into a vigorous art form unknown to much of the Australian art community.

The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. Acting on its mandate to collect and preserve Victoria's documentary heritage, the Library acquires paintings, maps, diaries and documents that showcase all facets of Victorian life, past and present. The Library has an extensive collection of art works and a permanent display of 150 works in the Cowen Gallery. The works illustrate Victoria's landscape, early Melbourne scenes, and significant events and figures in the European exploration and settlement of Australia. The works range from early eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, busts to contemporary portraits and scenes of Melbourne and Victoria from the 1800s until now. Works of some of our most celebrated and talented Australian artists are in the collection and showcased in this book- Eug ne von Guerard, John Glover, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Ian Fairweather, Lina Bryans, Jan Senbergs, Juan Davila and Howard Arkley to name but a few.
