Reference: Contemporary Australian Sculpture by Graeme Sturgeon, with a forward by Dr Gene Sherman (to be indexed) [’To understand the present state of sculpture in Australia it is useful to consider 1960s and 1970s sculpture in America and England. Throughout these two decades Australian sculptors kept a careful eye on international developments, and many of them went to London or New York for advanced study. In the 1960s in America, David Smith was proposing a radically different approach while in the UK, Henry Moore, Reg Butler and Lynn Chadwick were a dominant presence. After Moore's influence began to wane, a new push centred on London's St Martin's School of Art where Anthony Caro and his colleagues were developing a startlingly different conceptual position guided by structural considerations and the open manipulation of space, rather than the shaping of closed and solid forms. A significant number of Australian sculptors studied at St Martins and as a result the Caro influence has become widespread. Sculptors featured in this book who studied with Caro include Ron Robertson-Swann, Michael LeGrand and Kevin Norton. However, since the 1980s a new perspective has emerged, characterized especially by a return to figuration and use of a much broader range of materials. This book shows just how imaginative and diverse contemporary Australian sculpture has become in the last decade. Included here, in both colour and black and white, are photographic reproductions of important works by 26 table Australian sculptors. Each sculptor is profiled in a succinct and accessible way by Graeme Sturgeon, who also provides a penetrating overview of the contemporary scene as a whole.’]

The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. A scarce catalogue from the influential Velasquez Gallery, located in the basement at the rear of Tye’s Furniture Building, 100 Bourke Street, Melbourne.
‘The manager was painter/printmaker, critic, broadcaster and lecturer Stephanie Taylor (1899–1974), and director, the art collector and connoisseur George Page-Cooper (c.1895-1967). The gallery showed contemporary traditional, and later, Modern Australian art, including some sculpture and prints, as well as indigenous art. In 1948, twenty-seven of Sidney Nolan’s Kelly series paintings were shown at the Velasquez Gallery for the first time. Under the management of Taylor, women artists were given much better exposure than at other galleries, and she organised a number of shows to raise funds for charities.’ – Wikipedia

Focuses upon the character and background of the Ramingining Collection, formed by Djon Mundine — who also provides the major essay for this book.
‘This exhibition of over 200 objects and images from Raminginging in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, was drawn from the MCA’s extensive collection of Aboriginal art. The MCA’s Ramingining collection was compiled by Djon Mundine (formerly Senior Curator of Aboriginal Art at the MCA and Senior Curator, Gallery of Aboriginal Australia, National Museum of Australia) through his intimate association with the Ramingining community as their art adviser over sixteen years.
In Aboriginal art, the natural world has been transmitted for generations through the integrated art forms of song, dance, carving and painting. All forms of representation in Aboriginal culture are not simply concerned with depicting objects in nature, but are aligned with the inherited histories and social structures that define Aboriginal culture and its intricate kinship system. The exhibition The Native Born respected and reflected these systems.
The exhibition divided the collection according to six different natural environments occurring in the Ramingining area: Larrtha’puy (mangroves), Diltjipuy (forests); Gulunbuy(waterholes); Retjapuy (jungles); Rangipuy (beaches) and Ninydjiyapuy (plains). Each painting and sculpture illuminated our understanding of an environment that is vividly alive to the artists at Ramingining. Senior artist Jimmy Wululu re-created his work Sandpainting(1992) on the front lawn of the MCA for the opening.
In 2000, a major catalogue was published and an international tour was organised by the MCA and curated by Djon Mundine.
