An important exhibition of art deco modernism in furniture, art and design. Wetstamp to title page and lower wrapper of W. J. Bradshaw, Antique Dealer, Woollahra, signed by Bradshaw on the title page. A worn copy, complete.

‘Staged in a colonial-era mansion on Sydney’s Macquarie Street, The Burdekin House exhibition juxtaposed antiquarian interiors on the ground floor with six rooms of modern design upstairs. Created by local artist-designers – including Roy de Maistre, Thea Proctor, Adrian Feint, Frank Weitzel and Roberts, and architects Henry Pynor and Arthur Sadler – these rooms emphasised the new streamlined aesthetic and colour orders of cosmopolitan modernity’ – AGNSW website.

Reference: Printed - images by Australian artists 1885 - 1955 by Roger Butler.
This volume follows Australian printmaking through a seventy-year period, from the latter part of the nineteenth century as the print (freed from its reproductive bounds) became a vehicle for pure artistic expression; through the great social and political traumas of the first half of the twentieth century, when print was co-opted to carry a message; and concludes in the immediate postwar years with prints that signal the artists' search for meaning and an awareness of self.

The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. Acting on its mandate to collect and preserve Victoria's documentary heritage, the Library acquires paintings, maps, diaries and documents that showcase all facets of Victorian life, past and present. The Library has an extensive collection of art works and a permanent display of 150 works in the Cowen Gallery. The works illustrate Victoria's landscape, early Melbourne scenes, and significant events and figures in the European exploration and settlement of Australia. The works range from early eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, busts to contemporary portraits and scenes of Melbourne and Victoria from the 1800s until now. Works of some of our most celebrated and talented Australian artists are in the collection and showcased in this book- Eug ne von Guerard, John Glover, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Ian Fairweather, Lina Bryans, Jan Senbergs, Juan Davila and Howard Arkley to name but a few.
