Linocuts of the machine ageview full entry
Reference: Linocuts of the machine age : Claude Flight and the Grosvenor School by Stephen Coppel. The rise of the colour linocut during the 1920s and 1930s is one of the most remarkable episodes in British printmaking this century. By their bold colour and dynamic rhythms, these prints vividly evoke the speed and movement of the modern machine age first espoused by the Italian Futurists. Claude Flight, who made the greatest contribution to the linocut movement, was an original and inspiring artist and teacher, who attracted many promising students to his classes at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in London. Among the most gifted of these were the English artists Cyril E. Power and Sybil Andrews, the Swiss artist Lill Tschudi and the Australians Dorrit Black, Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme.
Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, including letters, memoirs, photographs and critical appraisals in the press, Stephen Coppel provides a fascinating account of the work and lives of these seven artists. This book will introduce to a new audience the vitality and appeal of these prints, which, from the Second World War until quite recently, have been largely overlooked. A key feature of the book is an extensive and fully illustrated catalogue raisonne which documents over 380 linocuts, arranged in chronological order by artist. The catalogue records their exhibition history and location and provides documentary and contextual notes on individual entries.
Full contents Artists included: Cyril E. Power, Sybil Andrews, Lill Tschudi, Dorrit Black, Ethel Spowers, Eveline Syme.

The Important Collection of Books, Manuscripts, Prints, Drawings and Paintings relating to the Discovery and History of Van Diemen's Land and Tasmania and with a few items relating to Australasia, the property of Dr Clifford Craig of Launceston. Over 1600 items described. [to be indexed fully].

Clifford Craig (1896–1986), surgeon, radiologist, collector, conservationist and author, came to Tasmania as Surgeon-Superintendent of the Launceston General Hospital in 1926. He was a collector of early colonial furniture, books and documents, he amassed large and outstanding collections,
At the time of this remarkable auction in 1975 Clifford Craig was 79 and concerned about the high cost of insurance for his collection of books and art. He decided to take it to auction where it attracted great interest from antiquarian booksellers, the Victorian State Library and the Mitchell Library. Eventually the State Library of Tasmania bought approximately one third of the items.

The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. Acting on its mandate to collect and preserve Victoria's documentary heritage, the Library acquires paintings, maps, diaries and documents that showcase all facets of Victorian life, past and present. The Library has an extensive collection of art works and a permanent display of 150 works in the Cowen Gallery. The works illustrate Victoria's landscape, early Melbourne scenes, and significant events and figures in the European exploration and settlement of Australia. The works range from early eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, busts to contemporary portraits and scenes of Melbourne and Victoria from the 1800s until now. Works of some of our most celebrated and talented Australian artists are in the collection and showcased in this book- Eug ne von Guerard, John Glover, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Ian Fairweather, Lina Bryans, Jan Senbergs, Juan Davila and Howard Arkley to name but a few.

Reference: see Battle Lines - Australian Artists at War, by Scott Bevan.
For as long as Australians have been serving in wars, the victories and losses, battles and faces have been recorded by artists. What is it like to be an artist in war? How does the experience of war change artists and how, in turn, has their work changed Australians' view of themselves, their country and their involvement in conflict? Award-winning journalist Scott Bevan put these questions to Australian artists who have recorded, been affected by and responded to theatres of war, including Sir William Dargie, Nora Heysen, Ray Parkin, Bruce Fletcher, Rick Amor, Ray Beattie, Wendy Sharpe and Peter Churcher. Their stories are fascinating, painting a vivid picture of the artists' experience of depicting conflict: the hope and tragedy, inspiration and frustration, humanity and beauty that can be found amid the death and destruction of war. Staining the paper with their own sweat, and drawing with whatever materials they had to hand in hostile and dangerous environments, the artists risked their lives to create their art. They were compelled to record what they were seeing, from Alan Moore's bleak sketches of the horror of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, to Ray Parkin's drawings of the tropical beauty that lay just beyond the barbed wire of the Japanese prisoner-of-war camp he was interned in, to Rick Amor's imposing and thought-provoking oil paintings of the destruction in East Timor in 1999. These artists have shaped how we see war, immortalising soldiers and battles. From World War II to Vietnam and the war against terrorism, the war artist has opened our eyes and perceptions to historic events that might otherwise have been censored, distorted or forgotten. In the process they have created some extraordinary art - beautiful, harrowing, mesmerising and character defining.

Reference: see Earth, Fire, water, Air - Anne Dangar’s Letters to Grace Crowley 1930-1951. ‘Earth, Fire, Water, Air is a collection of letters written by Anne Dangar to her soul-sister and fellow artist, Grace Crowley. For all those who loved Stravinsky's Lunch, this book is a must, charting the history of Australian modern art, and one remarkable woman's personal journey through that history. Like many Australian artists, Dangar decided she needed to move overseas to live a life of art. She was forty years old when she became a disciple of the cubist painter Albert Gleizes and joined small artists' community in the village of Sablons in France. Life there was full of hardship. The winters were difficult and the house lacked even the most basic amenities. In her letters, Dangar wryly describes her self-subsistence farming and bee-keeping, commenting that on arrival at Sablons she gave up the paintbrush for the spade. In the process, she discovered a new art in combining traditional French pottery with decorations based on cubism and Gleizes' theories on design. The war made life even harder than previously, but Dangar was undeterred and filled with admiration for the French Resistance. In 1948 she finally realised her dream of establishing a pottery studio. Dangar writes with a disingenuous enthusiasm on subjects ranging through painting, potting, Medieval and modern art, colour, other artists, poverty, spiritual beliefs, clothes, cats, the life of surrounding villages, her pupils, the seasons. Her loneliness, to which she freely and frequently confesses, leads her to pour out her heart to Crowley without inhibition. In this part of central France, Dangar was considered a saint and Gleizes called her his spiritual daughter. This is he story of an artist who truly lived her art’

Reference: Earth, Fire, water, Air - Anne Dangar’s Letters to Grace Crowley 1930-1951. This is he story of an artist who truly lived her art.’

He won the Archibald Prize, Australia's premier award for portrait artists on eight separate occasions; a record held since 1952. Dargie was an official Australian war artist during World War II and painted multiple portraits of Queen Elizabeth II as well as the official portraits of two Prime Ministers of Australia and two Governors-General of Australia. His portrait of Sir Robert Menzies was the front cover of the April 1960 edition of Time Magazine. Dargie painted in a conservative style and is now largely forgotten despite his substantial artistic achievements.’]
