Durack Mary & Elizabethview full entry
Reference: The Way of the Whirlwind.
[’he rare first edition of the children’s classic, a fantasy inspired by Aboriginal legends, with all the plates present and in perfect condition, in the notably rare dustjacket. The way of the whirlwind was the fifth collaboration by the two sisters, each awarded an OBE in 1966, and later a DBE to Mary in 1977 and CMG to Elizabeth in 1983.
‘The most significant contribution made to Australian children’s literature by Mary and Elizabeth Durack is The way of the Whirlwind, a story of Aboriginal children Nungaree and Jungaree and their search for a baby brother who has been stolen by the whirlwind. It was, in its way, a milestone inasmuch as it managed to place the conventions of European fairytale in a distinctively Australian setting along with some arresting paintings of bold colour and design’ (McVITTY, Walter, Authors & illustrators of Australian Children’s books, Sydney : 1989, p. 65).
‘In the folk-lore tradition nothing has yet appeared to equal The Way of the Whirlwind (1941) by Mary and Elizabeth Durack’ (SAXBY, H. M. A history of Australian children’s literature 1941 – 1970, Sydney, 1971, p. 142). Muir 2186.’ from Douglas Stewar Fine Books].

Publishing details: Consolidated Press, 1941, 1st edition. Sydney, pp. 79, illustrated with twelve tipped-in plates, and vignette illustrations throughout. A little loose in spine.

The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. Acting on its mandate to collect and preserve Victoria's documentary heritage, the Library acquires paintings, maps, diaries and documents that showcase all facets of Victorian life, past and present. The Library has an extensive collection of art works and a permanent display of 150 works in the Cowen Gallery. The works illustrate Victoria's landscape, early Melbourne scenes, and significant events and figures in the European exploration and settlement of Australia. The works range from early eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, busts to contemporary portraits and scenes of Melbourne and Victoria from the 1800s until now. Works of some of our most celebrated and talented Australian artists are in the collection and showcased in this book- Eug ne von Guerard, John Glover, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Ian Fairweather, Lina Bryans, Jan Senbergs, Juan Davila and Howard Arkley to name but a few.
