Reference: Australian Sketchbook. [Facsimile. 'This Lansdowne Edition is limited to 1000 copies of which this is number 358. The Australian Sketchbook, a portfolio of coloured lithographed views mostly of rural life, was first published in 1864 and was first published in 1864 and ran to several editions (Biography of the artist). Although S.T. Gill produced many delicate watercolour landscapes, he is best known for his figure-crowded sketches of diggers and the goldfields which have been likened the work of Thomas Rowlandson. Gill was known as 'the artist of the goldfields'. The lithograph plates in this book, however, are taken from a later period and are more diverse in subject although still crowded with figures of humans, horses and dogs. They are reproduced from a copy of the first edition (1864) of the Australian Sketchbook published by Hamel & Ferguson, Melbourne, in the possession of the publisher. The descriptive extracts which accompany the plates, while not intended as commentaries on specific illustrations, provide an authentic background to typic scenes of early Australian life which were Gills metier.' (publishers note).
Publishing details: Landsdowne, 1974. Facsimile Edition; limited to 1000 copies, pp. [64]; 25 coloured plates (reproduced from the originals & including the original title-page); a fine copy in original slip-case

Reference: for essay with this title see The Art of the Collection, - State Library of Victoria, with Richard Aitken, Leigh Astbury, Ashley Crawford, Graeme Davidson and Brenda Niall. The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. Acting on its mandate to collect and preserve Victoria's documentary heritage, the Library acquires paintings, maps, diaries and documents that showcase all facets of Victorian life, past and present. The Library has an extensive collection of art works and a permanent display of 150 works in the Cowen Gallery. The works illustrate Victoria's landscape, early Melbourne scenes, and significant events and figures in the European exploration and settlement of Australia. The works range from early eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, busts to contemporary portraits and scenes of Melbourne and Victoria from the 1800s until now. Works of some of our most celebrated and talented Australian artists are in the collection and showcased in this book- Eug ne von Guerard, John Glover, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Ian Fairweather, Lina Bryans, Jan Senbergs, Juan Davila and Howard Arkley to name but a few.

Govett William Romaineview full entry
Reference: from ADB: William Romaine Govett (1807-1848), surveyor, was born on 3 October 1807 at Tiverton, Devon, England, the third son of John Govett, surgeon, and his wife Susanna Price, née Owen. He was at Blundell's School, Tiverton, from 1817 to 1820. He was appointed assistant surveyor in the Surveyor-General's Department of New South Wales on 10 July 1827 at £240 a year, reached Sydney in the Asia next December and began work on (Sir) Thomas Mitchell's staff. Part of his work included surveying on the old Bathurst road, during which he discovered Govett's Leap in the Blue Mountains, which was named by Mitchell in his honour. Mitchell was pleased with Govett and described him in a report on the department in 1832 as a wild young man who needed control, who had come to the colony ignorant of surveying but with much natural talent had become perhaps the ablest delineator of ground in the department, and who was remarkably clever at dealing with unexplored country.
In February 1829 Govett was sent to the Hawkesbury River, where many farms required measurement, but in 1833 his career ended abruptly when the department was reduced. Govett returned to England in the Ann in March 1834 with a letter of recommendation from Mitchell to the British government. After his return to England Govett lived at Tiverton, where he wrote several articles on New South Wales which were published in the Saturday Magazine between 7 May 1836 and 2 September 1837 under the title 'Sketches of New South Wales'. They dealt with such topics as the nature of the country he had helped to survey, the habits of the Aboriginals, and life in Sydney; they were illustrated with twelve paintings by Govett, which were later advertised for sale by G. Michelmore & Co.
Govett appears to have undergone a personal crisis after his return and repented of his wild early life, but although he considered going abroad again and making a fresh beginning he did not live long and died on 22 August 1848 in London.]
