Reference: The tilted cross by Hal Porter. Introduction by Adrian Mitchell. [’The tilted cross, is a facsimile of reality set in old Hobart town.’] [’'''The Tilted Cross" is 'a facsimile of reality' in intention; but despite its basis in historical fact, and despite Porter's claim to have no imagination, the novel takes on a life of its own, an imaginative vitality. Campbell Street chorus has all the roaring energy, the comic gusto, the bizarre and boisterous excess of, say, Smollett's low-life scenes, and if Hobart Town was not actually like this, we are led to accept for the moment that it might have been.']

Reference: Wainewright the Poisoner by Andrew Motion. ‘The colourful autobiography/biography of Thomas Griffiths Wainewright, 19th-century painter, writer, dandy and friend to major figures of the Romantic period and poisoner.Convicted of forgery (there was never enough evidence to prove murder) he was sent to the penal colony of Tasmania. He died there in 1847.Using a blend of " .. creative imagination and scholarly sleuthing, Andrew Motion evokes Wainewright's double life in a tour de force of the biographer's art. Cast in the form of a partly fictionalised "confession" written by the subject himself, buttressed (and sometimes contradicted) by the notes, background essays and other commentary setting out the known-facts, it reveals the man as no straightforward history could do – his distinctive voice, his wit and charm, his callousness and unreliability, this pathos and, perhaps, his capacity for murder."

The text is illustrated with 16 pages of black and white illustrations/photographs between pages 138 and 139. 1/4 black coloured backstrip with silver titles. 3/4 green coloured boards.Illustrated dustwrapper with brown and green coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip.

The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. Acting on its mandate to collect and preserve Victoria's documentary heritage, the Library acquires paintings, maps, diaries and documents that showcase all facets of Victorian life, past and present. The Library has an extensive collection of art works and a permanent display of 150 works in the Cowen Gallery. The works illustrate Victoria's landscape, early Melbourne scenes, and significant events and figures in the European exploration and settlement of Australia. The works range from early eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, busts to contemporary portraits and scenes of Melbourne and Victoria from the 1800s until now. Works of some of our most celebrated and talented Australian artists are in the collection and showcased in this book- Eug ne von Guerard, John Glover, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Ian Fairweather, Lina Bryans, Jan Senbergs, Juan Davila and Howard Arkley to name but a few.

Reference: Australia Lost - Robert White's paintings from Poor Fellow My Country.
The paintings in this book by Robert White (1925 - ) were exhibited in Canberra in 1977. The paintings were inspired by Xavier Herbert's novel "Poor Fellow My Country" and each work is accompanied by a relevant passage from the book.

They are distinguished works of art in their own right but also echo with tremendous feeling Herbert's lament for what Australia and its people have lost through ignorance, selfishness and greed.

Reference: see Looking Beyond Yesterday - The Australian Artist and New paths to our Future, by David Headon (ed), preface by Bernard Smith. This collection of essays, poems and illustrations from Australian writers and artists has as its common link the desire for a just, compassionate and sustainable future. [’...an eclectic collection of eassys by prominent Australian thinkers, artists, authors, poets and cartoonists. They discuss their work in the context of promoting a peaceful social, cultural and moral climate capable of resisisting the often aberrant ideologies of politicians, economists and the military. They present optimistic narratives for a just, compassionate and sustainable future, in which artists need to stand up, be socially responsible and politically active. It concludes with a list of anti-war llierature, poetry and cartoons..]
